Why Obsidian's Lead Artist Called Avowed His Most Confident Launch

Avowed, Obsidian Entertainment's latest first-person fantasy RPG, benefits from a polished launch thanks to its delayed release.

Back in late 2024, the gaming world had its eyes fixed on Obsidian Entertainment. The studio behind some of the most beloved RPGs ever made was preparing to release Avowed, a first-person fantasy RPG set in the world of Eora. Originally scheduled for 2024, the game got bumped to February 18, 2025, as the holiday release calendar turned into an absolute traffic jam. Now that Avowed has been live for a while, it is easier to see why Obsidian’s longtime developers were feeling so confident before launch.

Lead environmental artist Dennis Presnell put it plainly when he spoke with GamesRadar: "Games are really hard to make, and every experience is different. I’ve always felt a certain level of dread months before a game shipped, a case of the nerves. But this is the most confident I’ve ever been in my experience at this stage of the project." That statement carries a lot of weight because Presnell has been at Obsidian since 2003.

He has seen both sides of the coin. During his time at the studio, Presnell was around for the development cycles of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 and Fallout: New Vegas. Both of those games went on to become cult classics, but the road to launch was not exactly smooth sailing. KOTOR 2 suffered from cut content because of a brutally tight deadline, while Fallout: New Vegas shipped with performance issues and bugs that players still joke about today. For years, the final months before release felt like a case of the nerves for the team.

Why the Delay Was a Blessing in Disguise

Avowed was originally supposed to launch in 2024. When Obsidian pushed the release back to February 18, 2025, some fans were disappointed, but the move made all the sense in the world. The 2024 holiday window had become crowded, and a later launch gave the team extra time to polish the experience. For a studio with a history of crunch and tight turnarounds, that breathing room was huge.

Here is a quick look at how Avowed compares to some of the studio’s past crunch-heavy projects:

Game Release Year Known Launch Pain
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 2004 Cut content, rushed final act
Fallout: New Vegas 2010 Bugs and performance hiccups
Avowed 2025 Extra polish and a clearer window

To be fair, delays are not some magic spell. Plenty of games have slipped and still stumbled out of the gate. But the context here matters. Obsidian’s most famous RPGs were built on razor-thin schedules, so adding a few months to Avowed was like giving a chef a few extra minutes to taste the sauce before serving. It does not guarantee a perfect meal, but it sure does reduce the chance of a salty surprise.

The table does not tell the whole story, but it shows a pattern. Obsidian’s earlier RPGs were often brilliant despite the chaos. Avowed was supposed to be the one where the studio finally had enough time to avoid the chaos altogether.

Confidence at the Right Time

Presnell’s comment was not the usual pre-release hype. It came from someone who had been through the wringer and knew exactly what a rocky launch looked like. After more than two decades at Obsidian, he was basically saying, "This time feels different." That kind of quiet confidence is rare in game development.

Some of the extra polish likely went into:

  • ✅ Squashing nasty bugs before players ever saw them

  • ✅ Giving the environments the extra love they deserved

  • ✅ Avoiding the brutal rush that defined some older releases

When Avowed finally landed on Xbox and PC on February 18, 2025, it entered a much different situation than those earlier classics. As of 2026, the game is no longer a pre-launch question mark. It is a reminder that a well-timed delay can be the best thing for a team and its players. Obsidian’s old headaches may not be completely gone, but for Avowed, the proof was in the pudding—and the pudding had a few extra months to set. 🎮
